The initial 407 ETR project involved construction of a 69-km, multi-lane concrete highway (equating to 560 lane kms), including 125 bridges, 20 interchanges, 15 grade separations, 13 river/creek crossings, 8 railway crossings, 85 km of sewer pipe, 11 million tonnes of aggregates, 580,000 tonnes of open-graded drainage layer, 600,000 tonnes of asphalt, and one million cubic metres of concrete road base. Other Aecon-delivered features included the electronic toll systems, high mast highway lighting, all other illumination, and complete highway signage.
Since initial construction, Aecon has subsequently been awarded another 10-plus contracts, totalling more than $300 million, to upgrade, extend and widen the 407ETR, including major construction of two bridges, one over the Rouge River at the east end of the highway expanse, and the other over Sixteen Mile Creek at the west end. In 2011, Aecon completed a $35 million lane-widening contract on the 407 ETR, which span from Highway 403 to Highway 401 in the west, and from Highway 400 to Highway 404 in the east.
