Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric

The 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydroelectric Project, located in Kinnaur and Shimla Districts of Himachal Pradesh, was a run-of-the river type development, proposed to harness hydroelectric potential of the upper reaches of the river Satluj.

The project included a design discharge of 405 cumecs, diverted through a 60.5-metre high concrete gravity dam, four intakes, four underground desilting chambers, a 10.15-metre diameter head race tunnel (HRT), terminating into a 21-metre diameter and 225-metre deep surge shaft.

Along its route, the 27,295-metre long HRT encounters Manglad Creek – intersected by lowering the tunnel to cross it at its bed level. Three pressure shafts, each at a 4.9-metre diameter, taking off from the surge shaft, were designed to feed the discharge to six generating units, each housed in an underground powerhouse.

Aecon was the sponsor of the joint venture which won two civil works contracts for the construction of the main dam, intake, desilting chamber and 16km of headrace tunnel.
